Storm Golf 2010-11

The Oklahoma City Storm Golf program was formed in the spring of 2010.

Competitive team play takes place each spring. There will be a 36 hole qualifier. The top two qualifiers will earn a spot on the varsity team for the entire season. The remaining three spots will be open for competition throughout the season. Three alternates will be selected in case some members of the team have other obligations. These alternates will practice with the team and play in tournaments if needed. In summary eight athletes will make the varsity golf team, five team members, two with a guaranteed place after qualifiers, three that must compete in weekly qualifiers to retain their spot, and three alternates filling in as needed and trying to earn a spot. If there is enough interest, we will possibly field a junior varsity team. This is a competitive golf program not a recreational one.

Tournaments

Team competition takes place only in the spring. There is no fall golf schedule in the public school. The team will play in 10-12 tournaments in the spring, with events starting at the end of February. The Storm golf team will participate in the Metroplex as defending champions this year. Competition is against both public and private schools on golf courses in the Oklahoma City area. The athletes will play nine holes two times per week. There is also divisional play and regional play. These are 18 hole events. Last year we competed in a couple of tournaments with the 6A schools. It is our goal to field a golf team that is competitive at the highest level. The highlight of the team’s golfing season is the National Christian Homeschool Golf Championship that will be held in Springfield MO May 19& 20th 2011. This event is open to teams and individuals. Kurt Talbott, our athletic director, did a great job of organizing last year’s first annual tournament.

Team members participate on an individual bases in various junior tournaments during the summer. There is no organized practice, but the athletes call each other up, get tee times together and play a lot of golf with their teammates throughout the summer and fall. If your student is interested at all in golf, we encourage them to get involved with team members and just play golf for fun with them. We have three players that are very dedicated golfers. These young men can explain the time, practice, and commitment required being successful in tournament golf.

Practices

Practices are held a couple of times a week during the spring. These are held at Hefner golf course or at our house which is on NW 150th and Council Road. If we are competing in two tournaments per week we may not have practice. Players are encouraged to attend all practices but it is not mandatory. If the players are not practicing, their scores will reflect this and they will not be able to earn a playing spot, therefore any penalty for not practicing is self imposed.

Fees

There is be a $25.00 fee to cover insurance and other administrative costs. Fees for tournaments are $4.75 for the Metroplex and can be as high as $50.00 for some of the school sponsored tournaments. It is structured so that you do not have to pay if you are not going to participate in a particular tournament. We have golf shirts, caps, and other apparel available if you would like to purchase them. These items are not mandatory. Your student will be responsible for providing their own equipment and transportation to the tournaments.

Teams

At the present time we only have a boy’s varsity team. There is starting to be some interest at the junior high level and there are a couple of girls that are interested. It is our goal to provide every homeschooled student that is interested in golf a chance to participate.

Storm Fundraising

Playing Storm Athletics at Reduced Rates /even with
NO OUT OF POCKET COSTS!!
We’re committed to providing an opportunity for everyone who wants to play for the OKC Storm to be able to play!! To help offset the cost of playing athletics, (again this year) we’re offering Fundraising Opportunities to help our Storm Families!! In fact, in the past few years, some Storm Families have raised more than enough money to cover all of their Team Fees; YOU CAN TOO!! Here’s how it works….
Players sell Ads in the OKC Storm Athletic “Program” to whomever they choose, and 50% of the Ad Sales offsets the Player’s Fees. For example, assume a Player owes $300 in Fees and they sell $400 in Ads. Then $200 (50% of the Ad Sales) is applied to the Player’s Fees and the Player only has to pay the remaining $100 balance. This can work for more than one Player in a Family, as well. For instance, if a Family owes $800 in Fees and they sell $1,600 in Ads, then the Family receives $800 credit (50% of Ad sales) toward their Fees; and their entire Fees are paid through this Fundraising Opportunity!
Any Ad Sales by a Family in excess of their required Fees, can be used in the following ways:
1. To provide Scholarships to assist other Families / Players with their Fees; or
2. Donated to the Storm to help offset other costs; or
3. Player’s 50% share can be rebated back to Player / Family to help offset cost of travel to practices, games and Tournaments.
TRADES: In the past, some players have worked out “Trades” (non-Cash) with vendors accepting a vendor’s goods / services in exchange for an Ad in our Program. For example, say Rib Crib donates 40 meals to the Storm Teams (a $400 value) in exchange for a $400 Ad in the Program. Since no cash is received in this transaction, the percentage the Player receives is reduced to 25% (as opposed to 50%) of the value of the Transaction. In this example, the Player who obtains the $400 worth of meals receives credit of $100 (25%) toward their Fees. Once a Player’s Fees have been paid (or they have sold enough Ads to cover their Fees), the Player will NOT RECEIVE ANY CASH REBATES ON ADDITIONAL TRADES (as we need cash to pay the bills; we can’t use the vendors’ goods/services to pay the Gym rent or the Officials).
PAPERWORK: You’ll find the Sponsorship Form for the Ad Sales on the “Contact Us” page of the website at www.stormhoops.com – please completely fill out the Form and mail the Form and the payment to Mr. Rick Krejci at the address below:
